A gang of 30 members took over Lolgorian town in Narok county on Wednesday before dawn and shot dead a watchman at a petrol station.
Residents said the heavily armed gangsters struck minutes past midnight and shot in the air before raiding Emayian Supermarket and Makutano petrol station.
The two businesses are only metres from Lolgorian police station.
The former chairman of the now-defunct Trans Mara County Council Daniel ole Malit accused the police of failing to respond to distress calls.
“The officers at Lolgorian police station should explain why they did not confront the criminals or seek reinforcement if they were overwhelmed. The gang had a field day terrorising the residents,” he said.
Malit said the officers should be transferred immediately.
He said the residents have lost confidence in them and the government should let them protect themselves.
Malit said residents are ready to raise money to buy a police car if the government does not provide one for the officers.
Peter Ongwacho, a director of Jipa Oil Company that owns the petrol station, said the gangsters took hostage guard Daniel Parmeres around the town and shot him. “When we put up the station less than a month ago we were assured of security as it is 50 metres from the Lolgorian police station,” Ongwacho said.
“But we are surprised that the police officers did not fire even a single bullet to scare away the gangsters. We would like to be told what exactly happened.”
Resident Ahmed Farah, whose home was attacked, said he lost Sh50,000 when the gang broke into his shop.
“I heard several knocks on my gate after the gangsters fired several shots in the air,” he said.
County commissioner Magu Mutindika led a security team in the town later in the day.
