Two people were Thursday killed and another seriously injured when two lorries collided at Maltauro area along the Narok-Mai Mahiu road. The Lorries that were travelling towards Mai Mahiu town were descending on the steep section of the road before the one that was behind hit the other forcing it to land in a ditch. The driver of the one that was hit from behind, police say tried in vain to control the vehicle that was transporting heavy luggage to Nairobi. “After his vehicle was hit by the one that was closely following it, he lost control of it and it landed in a ditch, killing him instantly. The passenger he was carrying also died,” said Samuel Mukindia, the Narok County Police Commander. A woman passenger in the lorry that hit the other sustained facial injuries and a fracture on her left leg. The driver escaped moments after the accident.
“The driver of the lorry that hit the other one escaped moments after the accident, leaving his passenger who sustained deep facial cuts and a fracture on her left leg in the cabin. We are looking for him,” added Mukindia. The injured woman who was retrieved from the cabin by traffic police, he said, was later rushed to Kijabe Mission Hospital and asked locals to assist police in the hunt for the driver. “We suspect that he is either hiding in one of the houses at the nearby Duka Moja trading centre or in a thicket away from the scene of the accident. Nobody should shelter him because they will also be arrested,” he added.
The mid-morning accident caused a huge vehicular traffic on both sides of the busy road that links Western Kenya, Nakuru and Nairobi counties. It took police three hours to disentangle the jam after retrieving the two bodies from the mangled lorry and pulling both to Olsasit Police Post.
